B-roll refers to video footage that sets the scene, reveals details, or generally enhances the story. For example, at a school play, besides shooting the play, you could get b-roll of the outside of the school, the program, faces of audience members, cast members hiding in the wings, or costume details.
These clips can be used to cover any cuts, or smooth trasitions from one scene to another.
4. 45 Degrees
When editing together a scene shot from multiple camera angles, always try to use shots that are looking at the subject from at least a difference of 45 degrees. Otherwise, the shots are too similar and appear almost like a jump cut to the audience.
5. Wipe
At weddings, I love it when people walk in front of the camera. They are apologetic, but unless it happened during the vows or the first dance, I am grateful for the wipe they gave me to use during editing.
When the frame fills up with one element (such as the back of a black suit jacket), it makes it easy to cut to a completely different scene without jarring the audience. You can set wipes up yourself during shooting, or just take advantage when they happen naturally.

6. Stay on Your Plane
When shooting, imagine that there is a horizontal line between you and your subjects. Now, stay on your side of the line. By observing a 180-degree plane, you keep a perspective that is more natural for the audience.
If you’re editing footage that disobeys this rule, try using b-roll between cuts. This way, the change in perspective won’t be as abrupt, if it’s noticeable at all.
7. Cut on Motion
Motion distracts the eye from noticing editing cuts. So, when cutting from one image to another, always try to do it when the subject is in motion. For example, cutting from a turning head to an opening door, is much smoother than cutting from a still head to a door about to be opened.
8. Match the Scene
The beauty of editing is that you can take footage shots out of order or at separate times, and cut them together so that they appear as one continuous scene. To do this effectively, though, the elements in the shots should match up.
For example, a subject who exits frame right should enter the next shot frame left. Otherwise, it appears they turned around and are walking in the other direction. Or, if the subject is holding something in one shot, don't cut directly to a shot of them empty-handed.
If you don't have the right shots to make matched edits, insert some b-roll in between.
9. Change Focal Lengths
When you have two shots of the same subject, it’s easy to cut between close and wide angles. So, when shooting an interview, or a lengthy event such as a wedding, it’s a good idea to occasionally change focal lengths. A wide shot and a medium close up can be cut together, allowing you to edit parts out and change the order of shots without obvious jump cuts.
10. Motivate Yourself
Ultimately, every cut should be motivated. There should be a reason that you want to switch from one shot or camera angle to another. Sometimes that motivation is a simple as, “the camera shook,” or “someone walked in front of the camera.”
Ideally, though, your motivations for cutting should be to advance the narrative storytelling of your video.

Because of the differences in frame rate and resolution, an MPEG movie needs to be formatted for either the NTSC or the PAL system.

The MPEG encoder that creates the compressed movie file analyzes each frame and decides how to encode it. The compression uses some of the same technology as still image compression to eliminate redundant or irrelevant data. It also uses information from other frames to reduce the overall size of the file. Each frame can be encoded in one of three ways:
• Intraframe frame - which contains the complete image data for that frame. This method of encoding provides the least compression.
• Predicted frame - which contains just enough information to tell the DVD player how to display the frame based on the most recently displayed intraframe or predicted frame. This means that the frame contains only the data that relates to how the picture has changed from the previous frame.
• Bidirectional frame - In order to display this type of frame, the player must have the information from the surrounding intraframe or predicted frames. Using data from the closest surrounding frames, it uses interpolation, which is sort of like averaging, to calculate the position and color of each pixel.

Depending on the type of scene being converted, the encoder will decide which types of frames to use. If a newscast were being converted, a lot more predicted frames could be used because most of the scene is unaltered from one frame to the next. On the other hand, if a very fast action scene were being converted, in which things changed very quickly from one frame to the next, more intraframes would have to be encoded. The newscast would compress to a much smaller size than the action sequence. This is why the storage capacity of digital video recorders (which store video on a hard drive using the MPEG format) can vary depending what type of show you are recording.

More Than Just a Video Disk
DVDs themselves are more than just a place to put your video project. They consist of an entire interactive format, complete with videos, menus, and background media content. There are a number of different elements that work in concert to make up the entire DVD.
Background

The background is one of the main elements and comprises the background images or video for each menu. In most DVD authoring programs you can insert a picture or video to be in the background, or even incorporate these things into a background template that the program offers. If you want to be even more creative you can use graphical design to create your own project-specific menu background.

Buttons
The main interactive element in the DVD interface is the button. The buttons allow you to switch between menus and play the video content. You place these buttons strategically on each menu, customizing them to the theme that the menu has.

Text
Text is an essential element for the DVD menus because it explains and titles the content in the DVD, as well as being its own informative content itself. Without this element all the design and media will mean nothing because it will have no context. Text in this fashion is always placed on the menus to label and provide information. If you want to just have text sections you can create menu pages that function just to display the text.
Frames and Video Buttons

Frames are an important part of each menu because they create a special button to play video or other media content. These items are given by the software as a way to create video buttons. These function similar to other buttons, but you are able to put photos or videos onto them so that they play continuously. You then connect these buttons to the video or photo slideshow tracks you want to play. When they are complete they are now called video buttons.
Audio

Audio can be an essential part of the DVD system, and you can import audio tracks to play with each menu or during transitions between menus. There is usually a specific spot in the menu creation interface that allows you to insert and customize an audio track. This track should really accent the content of the menu, including the theme and the video.

Final Cut Pro for DVD Authoring

Exporting Movie Files in Final Cut Pro for DVD Authoring

Once you have poured your sweat and blood into a digital video project you may want to put it onto a great DVD to show your family and friends. When you are editing in Final Cut Pro you must first export your movie file in a certain way to get it into the DVD authoring program.
Compressor
Once your final movie sequence is finished in the Timeline you will be ready to turn it into a movie file outside of Final Cut Pro. If you have been working on separate sequences that are all part of your final film then you need to nest all of the sequences and get them into a single one. Once you have done this make sure that sequence is up in the Timeline and then go to File in the task part and go to Export. When Export is highlighted it will open a number of options for how you want this to be done.

You need to select Export Using Compressor, which will then open a different program from the Final Cut Suite called Compressor. This program does what it sounds like and compresses regular video files, such as QuickTime files, into smaller ones. Once here a menu will open up, and in the upper left hand section is where you need to drag settings and destinations. Below that window is a menu that has two tabs, one containing settings and one containing destinations. Click on the settings tab and then select the Apple folder. A number of options drop down under it, and you need to open the DVD folder. Under here you will have a number of options, but the best one to use for DVD authoring software is the “DVD: Best Quality 90 Minutes” option. When you open this folder there will be two items in there, one for video and one for audio. You then drag and drop each of these items into the window in the upper left hand part of the Compressor display. Once you do that you will have two things appear in there, one listed as Dolby Digital Professional 2.0 and one labeled as MPEG-2 with a variable size next to it.

Choose Your Destination
The next thing you are going to do is select a destination on your computer or external hard drive for the compressed files to go. Highlight each one individually and go to Target in the task bar and the Destination option. There is will let you choose where you would like the files to go. Once you have done this both the audio and video in the upper left hand window will lose the exclamation points they had in them and will be ready for compression. You simply click on submit in the lower right portion of this window and the compression will begin. It will process the video and audio separately, and do so by cutting out frames. This can be a lengthy process depending ony your computer and how large your film was to begin with.

Authoring Software
Once it is done you will be ready to import them into your DVD authoring program, which since you are using Final Cut Pro will most likely be the associated program, DVD Studio Pro. This is a relatively easy task that is necessary if you want to use an advanced DVD authoring system for your final copy.

The Battle's Over

It’s definitely time to face it: Blu-ray won the war. After a few short years of placing bets on whether HD DVD or Blu-ray would be the winner, we now have a new format that is going to be the standard. With this we now need to upgrade our own home video publishing to match this new technology.
Usability

Blu-ray is much more versatile than your standard DVDs for a number of reasons. When authoring DVDs you may have noticed that you can only include 4.7 GB worth of data, which is very little once you add a variety of media and special features. The standard BR-D can hold 25 GB of data, which changes the entire dynamic of what you can do with home authoring. Beyond this you have the pure high definition video capabilities that are quickly becoming the standard.
Hardware

You will need Blu-ray specific hardware for this type of burning. The average Blu-ray burner can run anywhere from $350 to $550, but a good investigative shopper can usually find it at the minimum price. The Sony BDU-X10S and the Plextor PX-B900 have come out as effective burners, but the Pioneer BDR-202 has been recently announced and is expected to dominate the marketplace.

Software

Software for this emerging format is coming even more rapidly, and a quick Google search will reveal a number of free authoring programs that can handle the Blu-ray format. Adobe has led the pace with Encore CS3, which will let you jump formats even if your source material is not immediately compatible. If you are just starting out with home video editing you may want to purchase an editing package whose DVD authoring capabilities extend to Blu-ray. DVD architect 5, which is included in Sony’s Vegas Pro 8, is great at doing cross-platform disc creation. The same is also true for the Adobe Premiere package and the newest Final Cut Suite, for Apple users. If you are trying to do your best with freeware or older editing software you should give Nero 8 Ultra Edition a try, which will not cost too much money.

Be Practical

It is important to remember that, as this technology becomes the standard, the prices for all software, hardware, and discs will become progressively cheaper. Blu-ray is not coming in as quickly as many analysts had predicted, so you may want to hold off for a few more months. The best bet is to upgrade your computer equipment to software and hardware that can handle the format, but are not specifically based around it.

Here are some features to expect when you upgrade from consumer DVD authoring software to a professional version.

Making Decisions

When you are deciding on what type of DVD authoring software you want to purchase you may be debating between the professional programs and the ones that are aimed at the conventional consumer. Both will do the job, but you are not sure what you are missing out by going with the cheaper home version. Here are a few things that you should expect from a professional DVD authoring program.

Multiple Angles

Many of the nicer professional DVD programs will allow you to do multiple angle video tracks on a single video track. This means that the user will be able to watch whatever the video segment is from multiple angles, depending on their preference. This is something that you tend to only get on the most advanced film and sports DVDs, so it is not expected by most consumers. If you are very interested in publishing your home movie with extras or if you are trying to do an interactive video-art piece this may be an intriguing feature.

Language

If you want to do multiple audio and subtitle tracks, such as you would with language dubbing or subtitling, then these are often included. The standard film DVD used by a production company offers eight to nine audio tracks and over thirty subtitles. This is unnecessary for most home digital video producers, but it is a thought. Again, if you are trying to create a DVD project that is more than just a display for your film then you may want to consider this. If you are trying to give it to friends and family that have a distant nationality, then this may help bridge the language barrier.

Protection

The programs also tend to have features to ensure the success of your project. This includes content checking, which makes sure that all the tracks and specified areas actually have the appropriate content, and link checking, which makes sure all the button links and standard DVD links are working. This will make sure that you do not burn multiple copies of the DVD just to realize that the Menu button doesn’t work.

Security

One thing that separates home DVDs from professional DVDs is right protection software that stops them from being copied. This protective measure, often called the Content Scrambling System, blocks people that would make captured copies of the DVD. This usually does not work anyway, and unless you are trying to personally distribute your film there really is no reason to do this.

You will also want to have Blu-ray capabilities, dual disc burning options, a large amount of menu and button templates, and the ability to customize menus much more than you would with a standard program. The likelihood is that most consumer programs will allow you to do most of these things anyway. That may not be true of the free downloadable authoring programs, but is true of package software like DVD Studio Pro.

Go With Consumer

The truth is that buying something like Adobe Encore is nice, but for those who do not want to spend the money on features that are not that worthwhile then you may want to just stick with a packaged program. The DVD authoring software that came with your editing package is usually sufficient, and there are even a few free and open source programs on the internet that are worth looking at.

The ability to make a DVD of your digital video film revolutionized home and independent filmmaking because it completed the final step in film production and distribution. Now you could make a professional looking DVD to pass around, and this ability will create a much better presentation when sent to film festivals or distributors. To create a great DVD there are a number of things you can try that may not be obvious solutions when you first open the software.

Try Somthing New

One of the first things you have to remember is that not all DVD authoring programs are the same. Though some of the best ones, such as DVD Studio Pro and DVD Architect, come as part of an expensive package, they are not the only ones out there. Begin looking around the web for freeware authoring programs, and look for unique features that you may not have considered.

Create Great Menus

Do not just treat the menus as simply places to choose your options. Most authoring programs allow you to include a whole variety of media right on them, including music and video. Though you do not want to overwhelm the user, you can still try and color up these menu systems. Try using a color palette for the menu that stays in line with the credits and main color motifs you have in your film or video project.There is also some software that has well designed dvd menus like DVD Slideshow Builder. Use a looping piece of music that is found somewhere in your film, but not in the very beginning because then it will sound repetitive once you play it. A great thing to try is mixing a piece of dialogue from your film with some music that coincides with it in terms of emotion and pacing. You can do this in a music editing program, or even in the video editing program you just used.

Transitioning

Try working with some of the menu and video transitions to give them a little more flair. Again, you do not want to overload them because this is distracting and makes the transitions take too long. Try putting a photo or just a small audio clip of dialogue from the movie. You can even try placing a piece of video footage. If you are using video on the menu then you can try and have another sequential video clip used in the transition.

Video Buttons

One of the most standard things that people try to do to spice up their DVDs is to take a small clip of their video and place it in the button that plays that film. To do this you usually use a template that has specified buttons with the ability to place video or pictures in them. If you do not want to use a template you can usually make your own video capable buttons, but you want to make sure that the position and style of the button coincides with the visual continuity you have created in the menu. All you have to do is cut out a specific clip, or montage of clips, in you editing program and then export them. From here you can import them into your DVD authoring program and then drag them into the button. Usually you will not get any audio from this clip because one audio track is able to play on the menu at a time, but you will get a looping video for that sequence.

Graphic Design

The best thing you can do is design your menus outside of the authoring program and then import them. This way you will have great designed visual pieces that will stay in line with your film.

Microsoft adds Facebook chat to Windows Live Messenger

Microsoft has added Facebook chat and status updates to the instant messaging software Windows Live Messenger.

Windows Live Messenger is the most popular IM service in the world, the company says, with 300 million users. The feature will be available in the U.S., U.K., France, Brazil, Germany and Russia. Microsoft says 200 million Facebook users are also Messenger users.

"Now Messenger is not only always on but you can have a much richer experience," said Dharmesh Mehta, director of Windows Live product management. "I can get social updates [all the time] rather than having to have a browser up."
Here is where you can get the beta version of Messenger with the Facebook feature.
The new features are part of an update to the beta version of Messenger and other Windows Live software that was first released in June. Windows Live Essentials includes Microsoft's free photo and video editing software, Movie Maker and Photo Gallery.

Mehta says a couple million people have downloaded the Messenger beta for the PC. Microsoft has also built an iPhone app for Messenger, which has been downloaded 6 million times.

Messenger, Hotmail, Movie Maker and Photo Gallery are all free, and built to improve the experience of using Windows as an operating system, Mehta said.
"The Windows experience can only be as great if you have a great photo and communications experience," he said. "We're not stand alone, trying to build a profit center."

Turn Photos and Home Videos into Movies with Windows Live Movie Maker

Are you looking for an easy way to take your digital photos and videos and turn them into a movie or slideshow? Today we’ll take a detailed look at how to do use Windows Live Movie Maker.
Installation
Windows Live Movie Maker comes bundled as part of the Windows Live Essentials suite . However, you don’t have to install any of the programs you may not want.

Layout
All of your added clips will appear in the storyboard area on the right, while the currently selected clip will appear in the preview window on the left.

You can adjust the size of the two areas by clicking and dragging the dividing line in the middle.

Make the clips on the storyboard bigger or smaller by clicking on the thumbnail size icon. The slider at the lower right adjusts the zoom time scale.

Previewing your Movie
At any time, you can playback your movie and preview how it will look in the Preview window by clicking the space bar, or by pushing the play button under the preview window.

You can also manually move the preview bar slider across the storyboard to view the clips as the video progresses.

Adjusting Clips on the Storyboard
You can click and drag clips on the storyboard to change the order in which the photos and videos appear.

Adding Music
Nothing brings a movie to life quite like music. Selecting Add music will add your music to the beginning of the movie. Select Add music at the current point to include it in the movie to the current location of your preview bar slider, then browse for your music clip. WLMM supports many common audio files such as WAV, MP3, M4A, WMA, AIFF, and ASF.

The music clip will appear above the video / photos clips on the storyboard.

You can change the location of music clips by clicking and dragging them to a different location on the storyboard.

Add Titles, Captions, and Credits
To add a Title screen to your movie, click the Title button on the Home tab.

Type your title directly into the text box on the preview screen. The title will be placed at the location of the preview slider on the storyboard. However, you can change the location by clicking and dragging title to other areas of the storyboard.
On the Format tab, there are a handful of text settings. You can change the font, color, size, alignment, and transparency. The Adjust group allows you to change the background color, edit the text, and set the length of time the Title will appear in the movie.

The Effects group on the Format tab allows you to select an effect for your title screen. By hovering your cursor over each option, you will get a live preview of how each effect will appear in the preview window. Click to apply any of the effects.

For captions, select where you want your caption to appear with the preview slider on the storyboard, then click the captions button on the Home tab.

Just like the title, you type your caption directly into the text box on the preview screen, and you can make any adjustments by using the Font and Paragraph, Adjust, and Effects groups above.

Credits are done the same as titles and captions, except they are automatically placed at the end of the movie.

Transitions
Go to the Animation tab on the ribbon to apply transitions. Select a clip from the storyboard and hover over one of the transition to see it in the preview window. Click on the transition to apply it to the clip. You can apply transitions separately to clips or hold down Ctrl button while clicking to select multiple clips to which to apply the same transition.

Pan and zoom effects are also located on the Animations tab, but can be applied to photos only. Like transition, you can apply them individually to a clip or hold down Ctrl button while clicking to select multiple clips to which to apply the same pan and zoom effect.

Once applied, you can adjust the duration of the transitions and pan and zoom effects.

You can also click the dropdown for additional transitions or effects.

Visual Effects
Similar to Pan and Zoom and Transitions, you can apply a variety of Visual Effects to individual or multiple clips.

Editing Video and Music
Note: This does not actually edit the original video you imported into your Windows Live Movie Maker project, only how it appears in your WLMM project.
There are some very basic editing tools located on the Home tab. The Rotate left and Rotate right button will adjust any clip that may be oriented incorrectly.

The Fit to music button will automatically adjust the duration of the photos (if you have any in your project) to fit the length of the music in your movie.

Audio mix allows you to change the volume level

You can also do some slightly more advanced editing from the Edit tab. Select the video clip on the storyboard and click the Trim tool to edit or remove portions of a video clip.

Next, click and drag the sliders in the preview windows to select the are you wish to keep. For example, the area outside the sliders is the area trimmed from the movie. The area inside is the section that is kept in the movie. You can also adjust the Start and End points manually on the ribbon.

When you are finished, click Save trim.

You can also split your video clips. Move the preview slider to the location in the video clip where you’d like to split it, and select Split.

Your video will be split into separate sections. Now you can apply different effects or move them to different locations on the storyboard.

Editing Music Clips
Select the music clip on the storyboard and then the Options tab on the ribbon. You can adjust the music volume by moving the slider right and left.

You can also choose to have your music clip fade in or out at the beginning and end of your movie. From the Fade in and Fade out dropdowns, select None, Slow, Medium, or Fast.

To adjust the sound of your audio clips, click on the Edit tab, select the Video volume button, and adjust the slider. Move it all the way to the left to mute any background noise in your video clips.

AutoMovie
As you have seen, Windows Live Movie Maker allows you to add effects, transitions, titles, and more. If you don’t want to do any of that stuff yourself, AutoMovie will automatically add title, credits, cross fade transitions between items, pan and zoom effects to photos, and fit your project to the music. Just select the AutoMovie button on the Home tab. You can go from zero to movie in literally a couple minutes.

Uploading to YouTube
You can share your video on YouTube directly from Windows Live Movie Maker. Click on the YouTube icon in the Sharing group on the Home tab.

You’ll be prompted for your YouTube username and password.

Fill in the details about your movie and click Publish.

The movie will be converted to WMV before being uploaded to YouTube.

As soon as the YouTube conversion is complete, you’re new movie is live and ready to be viewed.

Saving your Movie as a Video File
Select the icon at the top left, then select Save movie. As you hover your mouse over each of the options, you will see the output display size, aspect ratio, and estimated file size per minute of video.
All of these settings will output your movie as a WMV file. (Unfortunately, the only option is to save a movie as a WMV file.) The only difference is how they are encoded based on preset common settings. The Burn to DVD option also outputs a WMV file, but then opens Windows DVD Maker and walks you through the process of creating and burning a DVD.

If you choose the Burn to DVD option, close this window when the WMV file conversion is complete and the Windows DVD Maker will prompt you to begin.

When your movie is finished, it’s time to relax and enjoy.

Conclusion

How to burn Windows Movie Maker WMV video to DVD

By default, Windows XP has Windows Movie Maker installed for home movie making. It’s quite easy to use and gets the jobs done if you’re looking for a quick way to turn your digital videos into something a little more professional. You can import videos from your digital camera into Windows Movie Maker and you can automatically import your video directly from a camcorder also!

However, there is no option in Windows Movie Maker to burn your finished movie (WMV) to a DVD. It only lets you burn it to a CD! Now that’s just plain wrong. So in order to burn the WMV file to a DVD, you have to use a couple of free third party programs to get the job done.

Burn WMV to DVD
Firstly, your computer will need to have a DVD burner, otherwise this is not going to work! After that, you’ll need to be running Windows XPwith SP2 as that contains Windows Movie Maker.
The two programs we will be needing to help us get our movie onto DVD are DVD Flick and ImgBurn. DVD Flick is a very cool open source program that you can use to convert just about any video on your computer into the DVD folder structure and format. Once converted, you will use ImgBurn to burn the newly created DVD folder to your DVD.

Step 1: Save edited movie from Windows Movie Maker
The first thing that you need to do is to create your movie in Windows Movie Maker. I am not going to go into how to use Windows Movie Maker in this post (maybe a future one), but if you just click around and read the menu items on the left, it won’t be hard to add titles, add transitions and add video effects.
After you have completed the movie, click on Save to my computer under the Finish Movie section.

This will export your modified movie to a Windows Movie Maker file, which will end in .WMV.

Step 2: Convert WMV to DVD format using DVD Flick
Now that we have our Windows Movie Maker video saved to the hard drive, we need to convert it to DVD format. That’s where DVD Flick comes in! Open the program and click on the Add Title button at the top right.

Not really sure why it’s called Add Title since it’s really video clips you are adding. If you made the full video in WMM, then you would simply browse to that video and select it. If you have multiple videos created via WMM or any other video you want to add to the DVD, just keep clicking Add title.

Note the left side bar will show you the percentage of the DVD that is full, so it’s really easy to figure out if you added too much video or not.

Once you have added all of your clip(s), go ahead and choose a destination folder for the converted DVD at the very bottom. By default, this folder will be completely erased every time you create a new DVD from DVD Flick. Note that it can take up to 4.7GB of space, so you to choose a drive that has lots of free space.
Next click on the Create DVD

button at the very top menu. It’ll ask you if you want to proceed and that the data in that directory will be deleted.

Now just sit back and wait as it converts the videos into the DVD format. This can take up a good amount of time depending on how fast your computer is and how big the videos are. For a full DVD on my computer, it took almost 2 hours, so yours will vary.

Step 3: Burn files to DVD using ImgBurn

After the movie is converted, you can then use the free burning program ImgBurn to burn the files to DVD. Note that this is not a DATA DVD, it will be a video DVD that you can play in your regular DVD player like any other DVD movie, etc.
Start up ImgBurn and then click on the Write Files/Folders to Disc option.

Now click on the Browse for a folder icon in the menu at the top right.

Now browse to the folder on your hard drive where the files were exported from DVD Flick and select the dvd folder inside the main folder. Basically select the folder that is called dvd and that is the direct parent of both the AUDIO_TS and VIDEO_TS folders.

Insert a blank DVD and then click on the Build It button at the bottom left. It’s the one with the folder and the green icon pointing to the DVD.

That’s it! Once the DVD has completed being burned, you can pop it into your DVD player and you should now have your Windows Movie Maker video playing on your TV! If you know of an easier way to burn WMV files to DVD, post a comment! Enjoy!
